Lutheran Education Foundation, Inc. awards scholarships to deserving children to attend private elementary and secondary schools in Arizona. Donations to LEF qualify to be taken as a credit on the donor’s individual Arizona income tax return.
Parents submit applications to an independent outside evaluation service (FAIR), which computes the suggested scholarship amount. The LEF board of directors makes the final determination.
LEF was incorporated in 1997 and since inception has awarded over $3,400,000 in scholarships to students with true financial need attending twelve Lutheran elementary and secondary schools throughout Arizona. LEF differs from many STO’s in having no paid staff and keeping operating costs to an absolute minimum. For the year ended June 30, 2021, LEF awarded 100 % of each net charity dollar toward scholarships.
LEF follows best practices for Arizona STO’s by not permitting donors to recommend students. Scholarships are awarded based solely on verified true financial need, with priority given to students previously funded or transferring from public schools. Scholarships awarded in this manner enable many needy families to send their students to a private school for the very first time.
Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, religion, geographic location, or family status. All members of the Board of Directors are independent of the participating schools and scholarship applicants.
